Red in the Chinese culture can mean prosperity, good luck... somewhat suspected it derived from the ancient legend of the blood of Christ. That is why during the Chinese New Year, we're encouraged to wear red, give red packets, and wear... red undies. Its a tradition, superstition, and culture which is passed down centuries after centuries. We have no idea if any of that works, but it definitely brings some united happiness in the race by doing so.
